Catalog Description: This course covers practical experience in the area of shampooing and scalp treatments, manicures and 面部美容, all types of men's haircuts, hair and beard design, care and styling of hairpieces, and straight razor shaving with an emphasis on all barber specific services. 实验室 instruction and practice are an integral part of this program.

的理由: This lab course and the Basic Cosmetology 实验室 course are the main lab components for the COSB 1000 series.

This course is required by the State Cosmetology Board to prepare students in cosmetology/barbering theory and practices. The course content will give the practical experiences necessary to help prepare the student to take the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology Licensure Examination (NIC test).


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will maintain a clean work environment and follow the proper procedures for safety and infection control. Students will be assessed 每周 on sanitation and disinfection processes using skill pass-off sheets. All task lines will be graded on a pass/fail basis. Students will be reassessed until a pass is achieved.



Students will demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practices related to barbering skills; i.e. 一般头发护理, 男人的风格, 理发师削减, straight razor shaves, beard trimming and design, 面部美容, 指甲护理.  Assessment on all practical work is done on skill pass-off sheets, 每天, 每周, 按月计算. Students pass off all skills on mannequins prior to working with clients. Practical exams are given at the conclusion of each semester.

Students will demonstrate his or her understanding of the process of communication. Evaluating client's needs and the action required to produce the clients expectations.  Students will be assessed as they work together in groups, role-playing different service scenarios in preparation for working with clients.


内容:
Course objectives will be accomplished by providing students with learning experiences in the following subject areas:

-practice methods to ensure personal health and well-being
-maintaining a clean working environment
-proper draping and shampooing
-hair, scalp, nail and skin analysis
-basic haircutting, using shears, razor and clippers
-basic shaving, hair removal, and facial techniques
-safety precautions for straight razor shaving
-men specific manicures and pedicures
-beard and mustache trimming
-fitting and caring for artificial hair pieces
-basic communication skills
-use of first aid for cuts, burns, and other emergencies

We strive to introduce all students to the procedures performed in the barbering industry, allowing students to express their differences and cultures through creative projects and group activities. The course is designed to empower and foster talent in all students, including groups traditionally underrepresented in this career, and move beyond stereotypes.

Student learning outcomes will be assessed by a combination of the following:

Skill pass-off worksheets 20 to 40%

Hands-on application/participation 20 to 30%

Quizzes and exams 20 to 40%

Pedagogy Statement:
Teaching methods may include demonstration, 课堂讨论, practical application, 组工作, and the incorporation of low-stakes assignments.

在本课程中, instructors will strive to connect with students on a personal level by spending multiple hours daily with this group of students. Students will also be encouraged to make connections in order to foster an inclusive classroom atmosphere. This may be accomplished through group assignments such as students role-playing the client and student experience as they practice learned skills such as straight razor shaving, clipper haircutting and client consultation. Students will rotate until everyone has had the opportunity to work together.
